Center Circle

The Center Circle is the circle painted at midcourt. The center circle measures 12 feet in diameter and is the location of the jump ball. The circle is painted on the floor, usually in the same color and the same diameter as the sideline and baseline. The centers (or other designated player) from each team enter the circle for the opening tip-off.

During the jump ball the two players jumping for the ball are the only ones allowed in the center circle. The remaining players line up around the perimeter of the circle until the ball is tipped. After the jump ball players may enter the circle and run through it during play. The center circle holds no significance during play once the ball is live.

The diameter of the center circle is the same at all levels. It is divided by the center line which runs through its middle.
