Boxing Out
Boxing out is the attempt by one player to position his or her body between the opponent and the goal, in order to gain a better position for rebounding. Boxing out gives a player an advantage on the rebound because the opposing player would be required to reach over them (a foul) to get the rebound.
When boxing out, a player uses their hips and lower body to slide into a position in front of the opposing player. This position allows the player to then go up in front of the opposing player for the rebound and quickly pull it down to gain possession. If the ball rebounds off the backboard, or rim, at a different angle than anticipated, the box out may not be effective.
Quick feet, good anticipation, and a good position prior to the shot are essential for an effective boxing out maneuver. The defensive player is usually in the optimal position to box out the offensive player, because they are already between the player and the basket. Boxing out is very important during foul shots.
