Blocking

A blocking foul is called when a defender (without established position) illegally steps in the way of an opponent, attempting to stop his or her advance. This is a defensive foul, opposite of the offensive charging foul.

A defender must get an established position, with his or her feet planted and motion stopped, before the offensive player reaches that same position. If the defensive player is still moving his or her feet, or moving into position, then a blocking foul will be called. This foul often occurs when a defender attempts to squeeze an offensive player on the sideline. This can be a shooting or non-shooting foul depending on the situation.

To avoid blocking calls, the defender must be quick and anticipate the movement of the offensive player. Good agility and quickness are essential to the defensive player.
