Blocked Shot

A blocked shot is a shot that is prevented from reaching the basket due to a defender deflecting, or blocking, its path. A shot blocked downward as it is leaving the shooterÆs hands is often referred to as a stuff.

The ball must be deflected before it reaches it highest point to be a legal block. A ball that has started down toward the basket cannot be blocked, as this is considered goaltending. Since a player must get to a point higher than the release point of the ball, height is an advantage in shot blocking. Centers and forwards usually record more blocks than guards.

A good vertical jump is important for shot blocking. Players who can quickly accelerate upward will have more success blocking shots. Blocked shots are defensive statistics often recorded at all levels. A good defender should be able to time the release of the shot with his jump to reach the ball on the way up and get a blocked shot.
