Beat the Defender

An offensive player is said to have beaten the defender when he or she gets past the defender guarding them. This does not necessarily have to be the ball handler. Any player attempting to get open for a pass or shot may attempt to beat the defender.

Good agility, court vision, spatial and body awareness and quickness are required to beat the defender on a regular basis. A common portion of any basketball playerÆs skill work includes work on beating the defender. There are many strategies used to get by a defender, including screens, fakes, and change of direction.

The ball handler may use ball fakes, head fakes, shot fakes or dribbling tricks to move past the defender. An offensive player without the ball may use quick direction changes, screens from other players or baseline moves to beat the defender. Once free of the defender, the player with the ball may choose to shoot, pass or drive to the basket.
