Basket

The basket is the circular metal rim attached to the backboard. A regulation basket should be 18 inches in diameter and must be suspended 10 feet above the ground. There is usually a net attached to the rim which slows the ball down as it drops through. A successful shot, which must pass through this rim, is also called a basket.

The original basket, used by Dr. James Naismith in 1891, was a peach basket nailed to an elevated track. The balls had to be manually removed after each successful shot. Later a hole was drilled in the bottom to allow the balls to be pushed out by a dowel. In 1906, the metal hoop with backboard was introduced.

Each time the ball passes through the basket the team is awarded points based on the type of shot and location of the shooter. A basket on a foul shot is worth one point, while a basket shot from inside the three-point line is worth two points, and a basket made outside the three point line is worth three points.
