Ball Handler

The ball handler is the person in control of the ball at any given time. Any player on the court may be the ball handler. At the beginning of an offensive play it would usually be the point guard handling the ball. A competent ball handler must have good control and be able to dribble, pass, and shoot.

Ball handling drills are an essential part of the practice and development of an all-around basketball player. Inability to handle the ball leads to turnovers and poor offensive play. Therefore, it is an important offensive skill. Since any player may be required to handle the ball at any time, it is important that all players practice ball handling skills.

Ball handling skills include dribbling, shooting, and even passing. Hand-eye coordination, good reflex control, and agility are all important factors in ball handling. The ball handler must have good peripheral vision, as well as body and spatial awareness. Ball handling should be one of the first skills taught in the progression of basketball skills.
