Backboard

As the name implies, the backboard is the board in back of the basket. A regulation backboard measures 6 feet by 3.5 feet. It can be made of glass, poly, metal, or even plastic. The backboard can be fan shaped (for recreation use) or rectangular shaped, which is the regulation for most competitive play.

The basket is mounted to the bottom portion of the backboard. The backboard is usually marked with a square above the rim for shooting reference. The backboard can be mounted to a pole, wall, or inside mounting system. It is placed at the end of the court about 4 feet inside the baseline. The height of the backboard is not regulated, but it must be set at a height that allows the hoop to be at 10 feet.

Most high school, college, and professional backboards are made of strong, 1/2 inch thick glass. Although susceptible to breakage, these provide the most consistent rebound.
