Assist

An assist is a pass to a teammate that immediately leads to a score. For a pass to qualify as an assist, the scorer must head directly to the goal after receiving the pass. Because of this, each score can only have one accompanying assist.

Assists are one of the statistics kept on players at all levels. On an inside dominant team the guards usually have many assists, while on a break-away team the forwards may get more assists (from their rebound and outlet pass). The point guard will often have a very high assist record for most teams.

Good passing skill is essential for the assist. Teams that practice passing and use a balanced offensive attack will spread the assists out over several players. A team with a balanced offense, as evidenced by its assist and scoring records, is harder to defend due to the fact that any player can score and the ball will be passed well.
