Free Throw

The free throw is awarded to a player who has been fouled. It is also called a foul Shot. It is called a free throw because the player is awarded an uncontested, or free, shot at the basket. The shot is taken from behind the foul line, and the other players must remain outside the foul lane until the ball hits the rim.

There are different ways of shooting a free throw. Some use the traditional jump shot style, while remaining on the ground. Others, to get more arc and power on the ball, may jump during their delivery. An older version, seldom used today, is the granny shot, where the ball is shot in an underhand fashion from between the legs. This is the only area where this type of shot could be used without the chance of being blocked.

Although only worth 1 point for each basket, the free throw is an opportunity for some players to increase their overall point scoring percentage. The more automatic the free throw becomes the better chance a player will convert on their opportunities.
