Free Throw Line
The free throw line is the line at the top of the foul lane. A player shooting a foul shot must stand behind this line. They can not step on or over the line while shooting. This line is 19 feet from the endline and helps form the rectangular shaped foul lane.
The free throw line is 15 feet from the basket. It derives its name from the fact that free throws are shot from this line. It is the same width and color as the other lines of the foul lane. The free throw line got some extra attention during the 1976 slam dunk contest when Julius the Doctor Erving performed the first slam dunk from this line. He jumped from the free throw line to the basket and performed a slam dunk.
For many players, and coaches, the free throw line marks the cut off between the high percentage shot and the lower percentage ones. Since there were no free throws in the original rules introduced by James Naismith, the free throw line was not part of the original court markings. It was introduced later with the introduction of the foul, and free throw.
