Free Throw Line Extended

The free throw line extended is an imaginary line that extends from the free throw line to the sideline on both sides. This line is used as a boundary for the remaining four players who are not lined up alongside the foul lane while waiting for a foul shot. These players must be behind the free throw line extended.

This line also marks the area where the ball is awarded to a team for certain rule infractions. Offensive floor violations such as the three second rule, entering the basket from below, illegal assist in scoring, an offensive screen out of bounds, or a free throw violation result in the possession of the ball being given to the opposing team at the free throw line extended.

This line is an imaginary line and is not painted on the floor, although talk was started about using a dashed line to denote this. This idea was rejected due to the large number of lines already on the floor.
