Four Point Play

A four point play is similar to the and one situation except that the shot was taken from outside the three point arc and therefore the basket counts as three points and a successful foul shot would make it four points. The four point play is not very common for a few reasons; the three point shot is not a high percentage shot so any foul will throw it off, and players seldom foul a shooter at the three point line.

Some teams may attempt to put pressure on a good three point shooter hoping to throw off his or her shot, and risk a foul. A foul may only result in two points instead of three, and this can be important in a close game. However, if the foul occurs during the shot, and the shot goes in, the basket will be awarded along with a foul shot, giving the player a chance to earn four points.

There are players who are effective at drawing a foul during their shots, even on an outside shot. These players have the best chance of getting a four point play.
