Foul Line

The foul line is the line across the top of the foul lane, behind which the player shooting foul shots must stand. The line is the same width and color as the other lines of the foul lane. It is 19 feet from the endline, and 15 feet from the back of the basket.

When shooting a foul shot the shooter may not step on or over the foul line until the ball hits the rim. If a player does step on or over the line it is a violation and the score would not count if it was made. The shot is not retaken, however. The foul line also marks the top of the foul lane, where offensive may be called for a three second violation.

The foul line is one of the markings found on almost every court. Some other markings may not be present in recreational settings or on extra courts in a large gymnasium, but the foul line is usually painted.
