Downcourt

Downcourt refers to the direction in which the offense moves the ball. They move the ball from their ôBackcourtö to the basket in their frontcourt. Teams move the ball down the court to get it in a position to score a basket.

The ball may be moved down the court by dribbling it or passing it. The point guard usually brings the ball downcourt. While the ball is being brought down the court the point guard may call a play or begin looking for an open player near the basket.

Being able to move the ball downcourt is essential to a basketball player's success in the game. Every position must be able to advance the ball down the court, if needed. Practicing against various defenses, including a press defense, will help players learn to control the ball as they move downcourt. A team's ability to score is dependent on their ability to move the ball down the court.
