Double Team

A double team is when two players guard the same opposing player. This defensive strategy is usually used against the opposing teamÆs best player. When a team has a very strong scorer the defense may choose to assign two players to him or her to cut down on the scoring opportunities.

Double team may be a tactic used for the entire game or something used as part of a zone or press defense. In a zone defense, when the ball reaches a certain point on the floor two players may double team the player with the ball. In a press defense, players may slide to different positions as the ball moves to continuously double team whichever player has the ball.

When performing a double team it is imperative that one player always remains between the offensive player and the basket. This frees the second player up to cut off passing lanes and redirect the player toward the sideline or endline. A good double team strategy can effectively shut down a strong opposing player.
