Salary Cap -- The limit on the amount of the total money a team can pay its players. In the NBA, teams are allowed to exceed the cap in order to retain established “Franchise Players.” This exception is sometimes called the “Larry Bird Rule” after the legendary Boston Celtic “Power Forward” because the exception allegedly originated so he could be retained by the Celtics
Scoring Opportunity -- An “Open” player who is likely to make a basket
Screen or Screener -- An offensive player who obstructs a defender from guarding a teammate to give him or her a better chance to get “Open” and score
Shot Clock – The time the team in possession of the ball has to shoot it. In the WNBA and NBA this is 24 seconds. In college this is 35 seconds for men and 30 seconds for women
Shooter -- The player who makes a scoring attempt at the “Basket”
Shooter's Roll -- the rotation of the ball on the rim after a shot that allows it to roll into the “Basket”
Shooting Range -- A measurement of the maximum distance from which a “Shooter” is likely to score
Shooting Guard – Usually the most skilled at scoring points, whether from outside “Jump Shots” or penetrating closer to the basket for “Dunks” and “Lay Ups”
Sidelines -- The boundary lines that mark the outer edge of the length of the court
Sixth Man -- a team’s best substitute player. Generally the player who first comes off the bench to replace a starter, often a versatile player capable of playing multiple positions
Slam Dunk -- A “Dunk”
Squaring Up – the optimal shooting position, when the “Shooters” shoulders are facing the “Basket” when he “Releases” the ball
Starting Lineup -- a team’s five starting players, usually the best of the “Roster”
Substitute -- A replacement player who fills in for a player leaving the court
Swing Man -- A “Tweener” capable of switching between the “Shooting Guard” and “Small Forward” positions; often one of the team’s highest scorers
