Basketball Terms - C

Center – Generally the largest player on the team, the center uses his or her dominant presence to score from and defend a position near the basket

Center Circle – Midcourt circle where the “Jump Ball” occurs
 
Charging – An illegal maneuver in which an offensive player runs into an opponent who already has “Established Position.” An offensive foul, and the opposite of “Blocking.”
 
Clear Out – An offensive player (not the “Ball Handler”) moves away from an area to give his teammate (the “Ball Handler”) more room to maneuver
 
Commissioner –Head of the National Basketball Association. Has the power to instate new rules and discipline players coaches, officials, etc.

Court – Where the game of basketball is played. By regulation, the official basketball court measures 94 feet by 50 feet, and is bounded by two “Sidelines” and two “Endlines” with two “Baskets,” one  on each end.
 
Court Vision – The quality that allows a player to make the best passing decisions based on the positions of his or her teammates and opponents.  An important asset for a “Point Guard.”
 
Crossover Dribble – To bounce the ball from one hand to the other, across the body  
 
Cylinder – The invisible upward extension of the “Basket” in which the ball cannot be touched by any player. See “Goal Tending.”
