Passed Ball - A ball that is thrown by the pitcher that is not caught by the catcher. The catcher is not charged with an error. If there are two strikes on the batter when the ball is not caught by the catcher, the batter becomes a runner and can attempt to advance to first base.

Pepper - A warm up exercise where a batter hits balls to the infielders. The infielders then pitch the caught balls back to the batter.

Perfect Game - A game where the pitcher faces the minimum number of batters without allowing a runner to reach base or score.

Pick Off - The strategic play by the pitcher and a baseman in an attempt to catch the runner off guard and tag the runner out. It is utilized to keep the runner close to the base so that any attempt to steal will be less successful.

Pinch Hitter - A batter that is substituted for an existing player. The player that is removed from the game can not return at a later time in the current game to play. The pinch hitter takes the fielding position of the batter that is removed.

Pinch Runner - A runner that is substituted for a runner that is on base. Usually utilized as a strategic move to place a faster runner on base. A runner can also be pinched if the existing runner is injured.

Pitch - The act of the pitcher delivering the ball to the catcher while there is an batter ready to hit the ball in the batter's box.

Pitch Out - The strategic action of the pitcher when the ball is thrown while the catcher is standing away from his normal crouching position. The pitch out occurs in anticipation of the base runner stealing a base.

Pitcher - The defensive player located in the center of the infield responsible for pitching the ball to the catcher. The pitcher stands upon a pitching mound.

Pivot Foot - The foot that the pitcher keeps in touch with the ground while delivering the pitch to the catcher.

Play - The instruction given by the umpire to start the ball game or to resume the action.

Player - Any team member that is not a coach or a manager that is capable of action on the field.

Put Out - An out made by the defense. Another term for out.
