Sack – A sack takes place whenever a quarterback is either tackled or gets run out of bounds by a defender while he is still behind the line of scrimmage and has not yet been able to release the ball from his possession. This can happen when the other team’s defensive players are able to get past the quarterback’s protecting blockers, or in situations in which the quarterback isn’t able to find an available receiver quickly enough to make his pass. If any yards are lost during this play, they are added as negative yardage to the team’s passing totals, but the quarterback’s individual passing statistics are not affected. A sack is called only if the quarterback intends to throw a forward pass and is unable to complete it because of a defender’s actions. When the intent of the quarterback isn’t obvious, statisticians can use other criteria such as the chosen offensive line formation to decide whether he was in position for a forward pass. A defensive player gets credit for half of the sack whenever multiple players are involved in the play.
