Term Also Known As Description
avulsion   An avulsion fracture is when a fragment of bone is pulled or torn away with tendon, ligament and/or muscle tissue.
comminuted   A comminuted fracture happens when bone is broken, splintered or crushed in several places.
compound   A compound bone fracture occurs when bone is sticking out of the skin.
impacted   An impacted fracture has the broken ends of one bone driven or wedged into another bone.
incomplete partial or greenstick An incomplete fracture in which the bone is not completely broken all the way through from one side to another.
linear   A linear fracture is caused by a break that goes in the same direction as the bone's length.
longitudinal   A longitudinal fracture occurs when bone splits along but is not parallel to its length and is more irregular than a linear fracture.
oblique   An oblique fracture happens when the bone is broken neither parallel to nor straight across the bone, but at an angle.
serrated   A serrated fracture is a jagged break in the bone.
spiral   A spiral fracture crosses a bone at an oblique angle in a spiral pattern.
stress hairline A stress fracture is a very small crack or break in a bone, usually caused by repetitive overuse or trauma.
transverse   A transverse fracture is caused when the fracture goes straight across the long part of the bone.
