Wedges
A wedge is a style of women's high-heeled, dressy and/ or casual styled shoes that feature a wide, thick sloping heel made of rubber, wood or plastic. The term wedge describes only the type or shape of heel, so the shoe itself can be made in a variety of styles such as:
- Open toed
- Close toed
- Ankle strap
- Backless
- Flip-flops
Depending on the style of the upper, wedges can be worn all throughout the year and have become popular due to their stable heel. Unlike the stiletto heel, the wedge is shaped triangularly, so while it does cause an extreme angle in the foot (depending on the height of the tallest point of the wedge) it can be viewed as stabilizing. Some people feel that the wedge is difficult to walk in, especially the higher heeled ones. A wedge could even be classified as a platform in some instances, because in the case of the wedge, the heel and sole are synonymous and indistinguishable from one another.
