You're currently on:ThroatThe throat is the portion of a shoe that allows the shoe to be worn. The throat of a shoe is the opening that extends from the vamp to the ankle. The throat is where the wearer would place their foot in order to secure it inside of the shoe. After the foot goes into the throat, the shoe can be tied. Obviously, once the shoe is on the foot, the throat can no longer be seen as the foot is inside of it. A throat can be clearly found on shoes that enclose most of the foot such as:
When you think of the throat portion of the shoe, imagine the pathway into a vessel, with the throat as the pathway. Without the shoe's opening, you would not be able to put the shoe on your feet. Open-toed shoes and other sandals do not technically have a throat because there isn't sufficient material surrounding the foot itself. |
