Tassel

A tassel is a binding of gathered threads made of leather or textile used for decoration on a shoe. They are usually no longer than one to two inches long and are about one half an inch to one inch thick. Tassels are created by securing the top of the threads together and letting the loose ends hang. Tassels are used to decorate other items as well, such as curtains, tablecloths and some clothing items, and can vary greatly in size depending on the project. Tassels are seen as more of a dressy style although they offer appear on moccasins and after hours shoe styles. Tassels are more commonly found on women and men's dress shoes such as:

  • Heels
  • Loafers
  • Boots

Tassels are found on dressier styled shoes because they add something extra to the shoe and because they are often made of quality materials such as leather and suede. The tassel on a shoe is attached to the vamp and will typically match the color and material of the shoe itself unless the designer is going for a specific look. Some casual leather loafers will have a white upper with blue stitching and perhaps a blue tassel, for example. Tassels look great when peeking from underneath pants yet also complement shorter styles as well.
