Stability Shoe

A stability shoe is an athletic shoe specifically designed to control and neutralize the stride of a runner with an unstable gait. The term stability shoe is most often used when speaking about running shoes because that is when an unstable or overpronating gait can most likely lead to injury. Added stability features include:

  • A straight shoe shape
  • Firmer cushioning
  • Use of orthotic insoles
  • Thinner midsole
  • Medial post
  • Midfoot shank

An unstable or overpronating gait cycle means that the foot rolls too far inwards while running which can cause injury to the ankle, knee and hip. Those people who do tend to overpronate should look for an athletic shoe with added stability features that encourage the foot to land correctly. Stability shoes will vary in their rigidness so before buying shoes it would be a good idea to have your stride analyzed to ensure that you choost the right shoe type for your foot. Stability shoes are great because they ensure that the condition is not further agitated. The stability shoe will work to ensure that the foot is landing straight and not rolling inward when it comes in contact with the ground.
