Spikes

Spikes are metal pyramid shaped inserts that when placed into the sole of the shoe provide additional traction for the sport for which they were specifically made. Spikes are designed for:

  • Track
  • Golf
  • Soccer

The spikes made for track shoes can be removable or made into the sole itself. The spikes used for track shoes greatly improve traction, which will then improve the performance of the runner. Spikes can be screwed into the sole or attached to a separate metal plate. They are different spikes that range in width and shape used to maximize the performance of different track events. The spikes found on sprinting shoes are lightweight, offer more support and are very stiff so that the runner can adequately grip the ground. The shoes used for distance running have more heel support and feature less spikes on the sole. Field shoes are very different and the shoes are made specifically for each event (for example, shotputting, triple jump, etc.).

Golfers wear shoes with exchangeable spikes, which increase the grip on greens and wet surfaces. Golf shoes have either rubber, metal or plastic spikes.

Cleats are typically used for sports such as soccer and American football. The "spikes" on these shoes are thicker, stud-like shaped and are called cleats. Soccer shoes have three different types of cleats, which enable the player to perform under different conditions. There are:

  • Soft ground cleats- metal cleats made for wet surfaces
  • Firm ground cleats- made for naturally firm surfaces
  • Hard ground cleats- made for naturally hard surfaces
