Sole

The term sole describes the bottom portion of the shoe that has contact with the ground, typically excluding the heel. The sole of a shoe is important because it provides separation between the ground and the foot. A shoe ceases to be a shoe without a sole. A sole can be made of different types of material depending on the style of the shoe. A sole can be made of:

• Rubber
• Leather
• Wood
• Suede
• Plastic

The height of the sole can vary as well, as in the case of platform shoes. The sole is usually attached to the upper of the shoe by glue, cement or stitching. A consumer can determine from the condition of the sole whether or not a shoe needs to be replaced. The sole of the shoe will endure most of the wear so it is important to buy shoes that are made well.
