Socks

A sock is a woven or knitted clothing item specifically worn on the foot. Socks are bought as a pair (one sock for each foot) and are designed to:

  • Provide warmth to the foot
  • Absorb moisture
  • Provide a barrier between the foot and the shoe
  • Keep the foot clean
  • Be fashionable
  • Add comfort and cushioning to the foot

There are different types of socks, which correspond to the different lengths available. Socks can be found in several varieties such as:

  • Crew
  • Mid-calf
  • Bare
  • Thigh
  • Knee-high
  • Dress
  • Toe

Socks are typically worn around the house or with close-toed shoe styles such as athletic shoes and casual sneakers. It is considered tacky to wear socks with open-toed shoes or heels. Open- toed shoes should be worn with bare feet and heels should be worn with bare feet or stockings. Men typically wear dress socks with dress shoes so that when their pants rise up people will see socks instead of bare legs.

Socks also provide additional cushioning for the foot during physical activity. Wearing socks prevents blisters from developing on the foot from the excessive rubbing that can occur in the inside of the shoe. Socks are made from materials like cotton, polyester, wool, nylon, or spandex depending on the anticipated usage of the sock. Several companies such as Nike and Asics have constructed socks specifically designed to wick away moisture from the foot.
