Slingback

A slingback is a backless women's shoe characterized by a leather or elastic strap behind the heel or ankle used to keep the shoe secured onto the foot. A slingback typically does not feature other straps except for the one behind the foot, unless they are used primarily for decoration. The slingback strap's primary function is to keep the shoe on the foot, although it has been recognized in the fashion industry for its style as well.

The slingback shoe itself can be open or close-toed and comes in a variety of styles and heel heights. Depending on the style and materials used to construct the shoe, a slingback can be very dressy or very casual, thus complementing a wide range of clothing items.

Slingbacks have been popular since the 1930s and are the closest in style and function to the slip-on or slide. Slingbacks are very functional because they require minimum effort when dressing. The strap or a portion of it is usually elastic so adjustments are not typically a factor. Slingbacks, while great for casual activities, might be uncomfortable for more rigorous activity such as dancing where the shoe could slip off of the foot.
