Shoe Size

Shoe sizes are whole and half numbers and correspond to the measurement of the foot on the Brannock device. Once your measurement is taken, you will be able to find a pair of shoes that will fit your foot. There are different shoe sizes specifically tailored to the feet of infants, children, men and women. A human's first pair of shoes will be bought in an infant size and will progress from there, depending on how fast their foot grows.

Women are free to wear men's shoes, but because the sizes are different their foot would need to be measured to see what size corresponds to the measurement of the foot. Women can wear men's sizes but the sizes themselves are often smaller than their normal size in women's shoes. This is because men's shoes are typically larger because men are usually taller than women, which results in them having longer feet.

Your shoe size is also determined by the width of your foot. Some shoes are made in different widths for some particular sizes so it is a good idea to know your foot's width size as well. Shoe sizes are expressed in a combination of whole and half numbers such as:

  • 6
  • 2 ¬?
  • 11
  • 13
  • 7 ¬?

Your shoe size should only be a guideline when buying shoes, as all shoes are made differently. If you wear a women's size 6 in dress shoes, you would probably wear a 7 in an athletic shoe. You want to consider how that particular shoe fits your foot and what size is the most comfortable. If your shoe slips off your foot or your toe is pressed up against the top of the shoe, you should reconsider which size you decide to buy. Some shoes run large or small, so if you are normally a size 10 in a shoe that runs small you might buy a size 11.
