Running Shoe

Running shoes are a type of athletic shoe made specifically to cushion and support the foot while running. They are designed to accommodate the foot while in motion to lessen the odds of an injury and allow the wearer to run for a longer amount of time. Running shoes are made for different kinds of running including:

  • Trail running
  • Sprinting
  • Long distance running
  • Short distance running

Trail running shoes are often a bit sturdier than standard runners, as they are made to protect the foot from the elements and well as provide excellent traction. Sprinting shoes are usually made with spikes for sprinting on a track while racing or training. Long distance running shoes compensate for problems such as over and underpronation by incorporating flexibility and stability features into the shoe's construction. They also offer mesh uppers for ventilation, which keep the feet cool and dry during long runs. Running shoes are specifically designed to protect the foot while running on all surfaces such as:

  • Gravel
  • Sand
  • Cement
  • Grass
  • Track
  • Rubber

Some surfaces cause a heavier impact upon the foot which can lead to injury, so most running shoes provide ample cushioning to counteract this shock. Running shoes are usually identifiable by key elements such as a rubber sole, mesh and/ or leather uppers, shoelaces, an enclosed toe and heel, ample cushioning and flexibility and stability elements. Running shoes can be bought to alleviate knee and hip pain or to provide comfort to the wearer while running.
