Quarter

The quarter is the rear most portion of the shoe's upper, which covers the heel and sides joined at the back seam. The heel section of the quarter is often strengthened by a plastic cup or stiffener, which helps to support the rear of the foot. The heel cup also maintains the shape of the material used to construct the heel area so that it won't bend when putting or taking off the shoe. The quarter of some shoes are made from a continuous piece of leather while other quarters are made from different pieces of material that are then stitched together in the center of the heel.
