Orthotic

The term orthotic refers to a device meant to restore your foot's natural function. The function is usually carried out in the form of a removable insole made especially to stabilize and cushion the foot. Orthotic insoles range in their ability with the most sophisticated being the ones made by a podiatrist in order to help correct an anatomical problem. Orthotic insoles can also be bought as a supplement to the factory insole included with a particular shoe. An orthotic insole can be used for a wide range of reasons including:

  • Support for the arch
  • Heel cushioning
  • Additional forefoot cushioning
  • Vertical alignment assistance

Orthotic insoles actually re-align the bones in the foot, so that the foot lands correctly which will possibly alleviate other pain in areas of the body such as the hip, knee and ankle. Orthotic insoles also encourage even weight distribution so no one part of the foot is overly stressed and provide some shock absorption. Depending on the nature of your foot issue, orthotic can be worn all day long or only while engaging in high impact activities.
