The term medial refers to the inside big toe and arch edge of a shoe. The medial portion of a shoe curves inwards to accommodate the shape of the foot, which includes the arch. The medial portion of the shoe might have added stability features such as plastic shanks or posts to help support that particular area of the foot within the shoe.
