Lateral

The term lateral refers to the outside edge of the upper of a shoe. The lateral part of the shoe is often the part that would come in contact with the ground if the person tends to overpronate while walking or running. This is the area of the upper in direct contact with the pinkie toe and outer edge of the foot. The lateral edge is the part of the shoe that is not curved to accommodate the arch of the foot.
