Last

A last is the term used to describe the solid, foot-shaped mold on which a shoe is constructed. The shape of the mold influences the function of the shoe; the straighter the last, the more stable the shoe. The more curved the last, the faster but more unstable the shoe. The fit of any shoe depends on the shape, size and volume of the last itself. Different shoe lasts must be constructed in order to make a shoe with different toe shape and heel heights. The same last can be used to make shoes of different styles as long as the toe shape and heel height are the same. A shoe last has three major components, which are:

  • Toe Spring
  • Cone or Instep
  • Heel Height
