Jellies - Jelly - Shoes
Jellies or jelly shoes are inexpensive sandals made entirely out of polyvinyl chloride or PVC. The shoes were designed after World War II during a leather shortage in Europe. The shoes were very popular in the 1980s and were called "jellies" due to their shiny jelly-like texture. Jellies were marketed primarily to children who were immediately transfixed upon their bright colors that were often mixed with glitter. The shoes are flat with a tiny elevation in the heel and are made in a variety of styles. Jellies can be found in styles such as:
- Slip-on
- Backless with a mid foot covering and ankle straps
- Thongs or Flip-flops
Jellies come in a variety of colors such as:
- Purple
- Green
- Clear
- Yellow
- Blue
- Orange
- Black
- Brown
Jellies resemble sandals because they allow part of the foot to be exposed to the elements. They are great for casual activities should not be worn for excessive athletic activities, as they offer no support. Jellies are marketed primarily to children because many of them contain glitter in their construction and are very brightly colored. Jellies look great during the summer and have the ability to get children excited about making a choice when it comes to their footwear. Jellies have no laces so they are easy for children to put on and take off on their own.
