Instep

The term instep can refer to one of two things; the arched part of the human foot or the part of a shoe that covers that portion of the foot. The instep of a human foot is the center and upper section of the foot between the toes and ankle that will greatly differ in curvature from person to person. The terms arch and instep are synonymous, as they both refer to the same parts of the foot or shoe. An individual can have a low, normal or high instep, referring to the degree at which the foot curves. It is important to evaluate your instep as it is a deciding factor in your foot's level of comfort within a shoe. If you have a high instep you need to ensure that the instep of the shoe adequately supports the natural shape of your foot, otherwise you might experience pain.
