The term forefoot describes the broad, front section of the foot between the ball and the toes. The term can also be used to describe the top area of a shoe, which encloses the ball and toes of the foot. The forefoot is the area of the foot that controls toe-off and also is the first part of the foot to strike the ground when running. The forefoot is also one of the most naturally cushioned areas of the foot. For this reason, the forefoot should receive adequate cushioning and support within a shoe, as it is prone to blistering, calluses and other ailments that can cause pain, functional problems and deformities in the toes. Pads and other removable cushioning devices can be bought and inserted into the shoe for extra support and comfort.
