Footbed
Footbed is another term used to describe the fabric lining or "insole" that runs the entire length of the shoe. A footbed is the separation between the sole construction and the foot. The footbed offers slight cushioning and support for the foot and helps to enhance the cushioning devices of the shoe itself.
Footbeds are a necessary element of an athletic shoe, not only because they provide a barrier between the midsole or sole of the shoe and the foot, but also because they keep the foot dry due to the perforation necessary for ventilation. Footbeds can be used to:
- Provide cushioning
- Provide stability
- Control the shape of the shoe
- Control bacterial growth
- Control the moisture produced by the foot
A footbed is usually removable and replaceable, but will last longer if accompanied by socks, which absorb most of the moisture produced by the foot. Footbeds are a necessary component of a shoe for comfort; without them, even the most expensive shoe would become uncomfortable.
