Counter

A counter is a stiff piece of plastic or other material that when placed in the heel of a shoe will retain the shape of the back of the shoe. A counter is usually placed between the lining and upper and is found just above the sole. The counter also controls and stabilizes the wearer's heel while inside the shoe and minimizes excessive supination or pronation of the foot. There is usually an internal heel counter, which is made of a very thin material, as well as an external counter, which is more rigid and therefore found between the midsole and base of the heel counter. A shoehorn should be used in cases of a rigid heel counter so that the heel of the foot will not crush the counter while trying to put on the shoe.
