Clogs

Clogs are a type of historic and traditional footwear for some European countries such as:

  • Holland
  • Sweden
  • Northern Italy
  • Southern Switzerland

In Holland and Sweden, clogs are seen as a part of the common dress. Whenever you see tourist items from Holland or Sweden they will feature someone wearing a pair of wooden clogs. Traditional clogs are constructed from willow wood and have thick wooden soles, making them somewhat of a platform. In Europe, wooden Dutch clogs are regarded as safety shoes due to their durability and hardness. The thickness of the wood ensures that nothing will actually penetrate the foot, making them exceptional shoes for any work environment.

It should be said that clogs are not in any way a part of the athletic shoe genre, and would be more in line with casual or after hours shoes.  Today, clogs (though not typically wooden) are a part of everyday footwear for both men and women due to their style and ease of use. Clogs can be either a closed-toed shoe or a sandal and typically have leather sides and uppers for style and durability.

Clogs are slip-on shoes, which is a great asset in today’s society. Clogs can be put on and taken off with the greatest of ease, which is helpful not only to the elderly but the young and busy as well. They are the perfect shoes to wear during casual activities. Clogs come in a variety of materials and styles and can be decorated with:

  • Beads
  • Rhinestones
  • Leather
  • Rubber
  • Fur
  • Metal attachments
  • Art
  • Paint
  • Flowers

Clogs can be made to be more comfortable depending on the type of material used to make the sole. The sole can be made of leather, wood or synthetic materials. The synthetic or rubber clogs are great for the beach or vacation because they are easy to pack and can be easily washed out and dried. Clogs can require some adjustment to wear because of the wooden sole and slip on style, but once your foot adjusts to them they become incredibly comfortable and useful.
