In 1930, a trio of brothers decided to start a business manufacturing canvas bags. These Frenchmen- Victor, Alfred and Gabriel Lafuma- created a company that eighty years later would be one of the world's top ten manufacturers of outdoor-oriented clothing, shoes and accessories. Lafuma's breakthrough came in 1936, when they created the first backpack to have a metal frame. This innovation in construction came at the perfect time, as the French government enacted legislation giving everyone paid holidays (what a wonderful year). Camping quickly became a favorite hobby, and Lafuma's backpacks were ready to hit the hills with the people of France.

The French military became a steady customer into WWII and beyond, but by the late 50s and 60s, Lafuma had expanded their lines to include tents, camping beds and other camping equipment.
